Canvas from week four in the #plunge series at St George’s Church Leeds.
Based on Mark 10:38, “You don’t know what you are asking,” Jesus said. “Can you drink the cup I drink or be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with?”, Luke 12:50, “But I have a baptism to undergo, and what constraint I am under until it is completed!” and Romans 6:4, “We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.”
Greens were an obvious choice for this painting as I wanted to capture the new life discussed in Romans 6:4. However, knowing that the title for this week was about being plunged into both death and resurrection, it was important to have the cross represented, with red symbolising Jesus’ blood, but also the triumphant gold running through the centre representing his resurrection.
